by As a teacher in the Houston Foresight program, I hope to see students apply what they learn on whatever journey they take. In some disciplines this is a fairly routine thing, doctors go into medicine, teachers into teaching, etc. … In Foresight, it’s not so clear. We do all we can to help our students and alums explain their degree, their skills and how they can help employers and the world. So when a student turned alum succeeds in doing this in a big way, we take notice and celebrate. With the launch of alum Jim Lee’s new book “Foresight Investing” we have a lot of celebrating to do!
Jim came to the Foresight program with a background in investing and a simple but powerful idea that an enhanced understanding of the future ought to make one a better investor. Indeed, after graduating he formed his own firm based on the principle of foresight-driven investing. Several years later, having made a successful go of it, he now shares with us how he does it – and what we can do.
Some more experienced readers might remember the ubiquitous commercial of Hair Club for Men in which the founder closed with, I’m not only the President, I’m a member. In this case, I’m not just a supporter of Jim’s, I’m also a client. It has been such great fun to chat and strategize with Jim about what he’s seeing and to make investments that align with the emerging future. It is reassuring to know that indeed exploring the future in a systematic way is useful in the investing space, as I have found it is in so many other domains I’ve explored over the years.
The usual caveats apply about no guarantees, but we’ve done really well, and it’s totally been a blast. If you think investing is fun, and want to invest with an eye towards the future (and is there any other way that makes sense?), this book is for you. It is beautifully done with color, graphics, charts, and written in a style that doesn’t require you to have any background in finance. I have been fortunate enough to have had several conversations with Jim Lee. It goes without saying that he is intelligent and insightful, I think most people drawn to this field are. What I enjoy is the way he connects the dots with investing in mind. Book ordered!
