A very nice review of Imagining After Capitalism by Tristan Markwell, a student in our Houston Foresight program [BTW, his Notes from the Future series is absolutely top-shelf!] I really like how he summarizes the images in a crisp fashion, but also do appropriate service to the seven key drivers getting us there. I can’t think of a better one-line summary of the book than this: Imagining After Capitalism is an essential reference for understanding how positive images of the future relate to one another, how we might get to them, and what dangers we may have to navigate.
It is fascinating to see how others make sense of one’s work. What key points are others pulling out? How do they organize their thinking on the topic? It’s not a light read. It’s packed. I hope in a way you might go through a section, and then take some time to think about it. I also hope that readers comes away with the images etched in and some tangible guiding principles, such that if someone asked you “what should we do,” you could up with two or three or give tangible ideas. These ideas become the scaffolding that you build on. If all goes well, then we turn to the Field Guide that gets into the details of the how. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. For now, let’s thank Tristan for an excellent job in sharing his insights and analysis of After Capitalism. – Andy Hines
