Every strong foresight project starts with clarity — and that begins with the domain map. In this video, I walk you through what a domain map is, why it matters, and how to create one that keeps your project focused and future-ready. Think of it as the blueprint for your foresight journey — a practical first step that brings structure to strategic imagination.
We cover:
— How domain mapping helps define the boundaries of your project
— Why scoping is critical before scanning for signals and trends
— Simple ways to visualize your domain for long-term organization and collaboration
— Organizing your scanning, such as my After Capitalism library of 1,000+ signals

It’s interesting to see a post about a “foresight map.” I once responded to a LinkedIn post about what futurists do by comparing what we do to what travel agents do. Travel agents typically sell people packages of travel and lodging to specific destinations. We, on the other hand, try to map out whole landscapes of time, including what obstacles may lie in travelers’ paths and ways travelers may still reach their desired destinations. So if entrepreneurs and inventors try selling people specific destinations in time, we show people the whole landscape and help people pick destinations best for them.
In response to that observation, Wendy Schultz gave me a working title for my concept of futurist work: “Chrono-cartographer”. I like that idea!
