by So what would you put in a time capsule today to be dug up 30 years from now? That question framed a thirty minute discussion for me and two other panelists during a popular lunchtime Houston radio program “Houston Matters.”
It was a pretty light discussion, more aimed at predictions than an in-depth discussion of alternative futures. Among the themes I explored about Houston in thirty years, which are mostly relevant beyond Houston and to the future in general.
- The greater role of technology in daily life with everyone having a personal virtual assistant, with AI and augmented reality
- I suggested that traffic jams would be a thing of the past with the arrival of automated vehicles — for Houston, this may have been seen as the boldest forecast
- Talked about 3D printing as having a catalytic role in a decentralized approach to manufacturing — not only bringing manufacturing back to the US and Texas, but to the local level as well
- Houston can remain the energy capital if it moves now to become a leader in renewables, the next wave of energy
